Squirrel Point, Arrowsic

Squirrel Point Light is one of four lighthouses along the banks of the Kennebec river. The navigation of this part of the river is tricky due to the various bends in the river, limited depth near the shore and the currents that require river pilots to have more assistance than further up river.

There are two trails available from the Bald Head Road Parking lot. One going to Squirrel Point Light and the other to Bald Head. The trail to Squirrel Point is easy with little elevation gain (or loss) and can be done by all people. On this particular day we just had time for the 1.4 mile walk to Squirrel Point for some pretty great views of the Kennebec River on a blue bird day.

From the parking lot at the end of Bald Head Road in Arrowsic, there is a single trail down to a convenient bridge over a small tidal stream. Shortly after crossing the bridge there is a fork in the trail to head off to Bald Head or to Squirrel Point. From the fork it is about 0.4 miles to Squirrel point through easy forested terrain. On this particular trip there was lots of ice on the trail and required micro spikes to make walking less difficult. In a few weeks it will likely all be gone.

There is a bit of elevation gained but not really noticeable. Before too long you will be at Squirrel Point taking in the views of the Kennebec River, Weasel Point (the point right across from Squirrel Point and Seal Rocks (just to left of Weasel Point).

In the above picture you can just make out Hatch Point and Perkins Island Light Station (just to left of center at the horizon). This walk is great for those who just have a short time to get out and explore but who aren't looking for a difficult hike. Plus the views are just... well the pictures can't really show it.
